ALIVE & SINGING Homeless Choir Celebration Album

Homelessness creates social isolation and can seriously damage confidence and self-esteem. AMAT’s choir will work with musical professionals to produce an album of new songs written and performed by them, reflecting on their experience of homelessness and celebrating AMAT’s 21st anniversary.

Need

Homelessness creates profound loneliness and chronic boredom, yet is often addressed by only encouraging training and employment or focusing on problematic behaviour. However many people become homeless through complex issues or traumatic experiences that include escaping violent abuse, learning or physical disabilities, mental health problems, addiction, etc. The key to addressing these issues is developing self-esteem, self-confidence, a sense of self-worth and feeling connected to others.

SolutionNeed

Music (making, playing and singing) is powerful in addressing trauma-related problems. AMAT responded to loneliness, boredom and trauma by establishing our homeless choir ‘ALIVE & SINGING’ for Christmas 2017 with 6 participants. Membership grew by 30% within 6 months. The positive results prompted requests by our homeless community for music sessions involving instruments and song-writing. We want to expand our Choir to produce an originals album of songs, written and performed by them.
